Tech giant Google has recently announced plans to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities into its search engine, likely in response to the growing popularity of AI-powered chatbots like Open AI’s ChatGPT.
During an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the company’s upcoming AI features will improve the search engine’s capacity to respond to user queries. He dismissed concerns that chatbots like Open AI’s ChatGPT pose a threat to Google’s search business, which constitutes over half of Alphabet’s revenue. Google’s search ads are its primary source of revenue, generating $162 billion in revenue in the previous year.
Google, a leading developer of large language models (LLM), has not yet implemented technology to influence search patterns. Sundar Pichai stated that users will be able to ask questions and interact with these LLMs, but did not provide further details. In contrast, Microsoft has integrated this technology into its Bing search engine to power its ChatGPT system.
As Google CEO Sundar Pichai faces investor pressures to cut costs, the intense competition from OpenAI’s ChatGPT poses a significant challenge to the tech giant. In fact, this may be one of the toughest threats Pichai has faced so far. In January, Google laid off a record 12,000 employees as part of its cost-cutting measures. Pichai also revealed that Google is still working towards achieving its goal of becoming 20% more productive.
A recent report states that Google is currently experimenting with new AI features for its email service, Gmail. Meanwhile, Microsoft is incorporating AI into several of its other business software tools. As researchers have raised concerns about the precision of AI-driven chatbots, the tech giant based in Mountain View is proceeding with caution when it comes to technology. Pichai emphasized that the company must adapt its resource usage to maintain its AI efforts while also managing expenses.
Google’s goal is to expand its business reach, as per the WSJ report. In pursuit of this, the company made its Pathways Language Model accessible to developers on its cloud-computing service last month. This is one of the largest AI systems developed by Google.
