Germany raises defense budget by USD 113 billion, after Russian invasion

Germany raises its military profile after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced a historic change in foreign and defense policy. After an emergency parliamentary meeting on Sunday, he announced to spend 100 billion Euros, or $ 113 billion, on his army in the year 2022. In comparison, Germany’s military budget in 2021 was only 47 billion Euros, or about $ 53 billion.

With the attack on Ukraine, we are now in a new era, Scholz said. From now on, year after year, Germany will keep its defense spending above 2% of GDP. Let us tell you that Germany is a part of NATO countries. All NATO member states promised to spend 2% of their GDP on defense in 2014, but Germany has consistently spent far less than that.

America has been opposing it for the last several years. Former US President Donald Trump has also repeatedly criticized former German Chancellor Angela Merkel for not spending enough on defense funds, an ally of NATO.

This is the biggest change in European security policy in the last several decades. It is believed that the reason for this is Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Scholz said Putin’s attack has made it clear that we have to invest more in the country’s security. This will create a powerful, state-of-the-art, advanced army, which will strengthen us and create a different world.

The German chancellor said it was delivering 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger missiles to Ukraine from its Bundeswehr stock. Scholz also expressed readiness to engage in the defense of the airspace with anti-aircraft rockets. Earlier he had offered only 5,000 helmets to Ukraine.

The German Chancellor says that 100 billion Euros is currently for the year 2022. This can be increased further in the coming years because it is very important for the country’s freedom and democracy to be preserved. Modernization of the German military has been slow over the years. After the Cold War, Germany has reduced its military strength from 500,000 to about 200,000. This needs to be increased. For this reason, more investment will have to be made in the security of the country.
