Satellite-Powered Voice Calls and Internet Feature Could Soon Be Available to iPhone Users

According to the report, AT&T and AST SpaceMobile are working on a project to bring satellite-powered voice calls and internet access directly to consumer smartphones without the need for any modifications.

LiveMint reported, citing PCMag, that Apple is planning to expand its satellite-powered features on the iPhone. After introducing the emergency SOS via satellite in the iPhone 14 series, Apple aims to extend this service to include voice calls and internet access. A recent Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filing by Apple’s partner Globalstar hinted at the possibility of these enhanced satellite-powered features for the iPhone.

The SOS feature on the iPhone enables users to send text messages to emergency services even in the absence of cellular reception or Wi-Fi connectivity. This feature has proven crucial in rescuing individuals who have found themselves stranded in remote locations. Additionally, the Find My app can be utilized to share one’s location with others using satellite technology.

According to the filing, T-Mobile and SpaceX have collaborated on a proposal to provide satellite internet services to unmodified T-Mobile smartphones. Globalstar has stated that its mobile satellite service (MSS) system will continuously evolve to support an expanding range of features and services directly accessible on handheld devices within its licensed spectrum. This statement suggests that Globalstar may be developing a strategy to introduce satellite-powered voice calls and internet connectivity to the products of the technology giant.

Furthermore, the report states that AT&T and AST SpaceMobile are actively working towards providing unmodified consumer smartphones with the capability of satellite-powered voice calls and internet access.

The emergency satellite feature is offered free of charge for a duration of two years upon activating an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro. Presently, it is accessible in several countries including the US, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK.

To maintain a reliable satellite connection, hold your cellphone in a typical position with an unobstructed view of the sky. Keep in mind that trees with light foliage may slightly weaken the connection, while dense foliage or tall structures like mountains and buildings can potentially block it entirely.

When following navigation instructions, carefully observe the steps displayed on your screen to turn left or right or to navigate around obstacles that may interfere with the signal.

It’s important to note that the satellite connection remains intact, whether your screen is locked or unlocked, ensuring continuous connectivity regardless of your device’s state.

Upon establishing a connection, the mobile phone initiates text communication with emergency responders. It shares vital information such as Medical ID and emergency contact details, responses to emergency questionnaires, current location, and the remaining battery life of the iPhone. This exchange of information enables emergency responders to gather essential details and provide appropriate assistance.
