Elon Musk Plans to Start an AI Startup to Compete OpenAI

According to a report by the Financial Times on Friday, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, is preparing to establish a startup focused on artificial intelligence that will rival OpenAI.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Elon Musk, who is the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter, has been assembling a team of engineers and researchers, and has been in talks with various investors, as per a report by the Financial Times. The report also mentioned that Musk has been hiring from other prominent AI companies such as DeepMind, which is owned by Alphabet.

According to a source familiar with the matter, Elon Musk’s AI startup is a real project and his team is enthusiastic about it, as reported by the Financial Times. Musk has reportedly acquired thousands of Nvidia GPU processors, a key component in building a large language model (LLM) to compete with OpenAI’s GPT. In an interview with BBC in a Twitter Spaces session this week, Musk confirmed that he had acquired the processors for his companies.

Musk commented in a recent interview on Twitter Spaces with the BBC, “It appears that almost everyone is buying GPUs at this point, even their pets. Both Twitter and Tesla are also purchasing GPUs.”

According to a previous report by Semafor, Musk was a significant financial supporter of OpenAI, pledging $1 billion over several years. However, Musk withdrew his financial and operational involvement in the artificial intelligence company when OpenAI added a for-profit business section. Microsoft stepped in and invested $1 billion in OpenAI shortly after Musk’s departure, and recently pledged a new multi-billion dollar investment.

Musk has expressed his concerns about OpenAI’s approach towards AI. In March, he signed an open letter calling for an immediate six-month halt on any research on AI models more advanced than OpenAI’s GPT-4. According to him, AI poses one of the biggest risks to the future of civilization.

With Microsoft, Google, and Amazon already in the generative AI space, Musk’s venture, if true, would be the latest addition to an already crowded field. Amazon recently announced its entry into the space on Thursday.
