Donald Trump Returns to Instagram with a Puzzling Post

On Tuesday, former US President Donald Trump made his return to Instagram, posting for the first time since his account was banned in the aftermath of the January 6, 2021 attack on Capitol Hill.

Trump utilized Instagram to promote the second edition of his digital trading cards, which sold out 44,000 pieces in less than a day, generating $4.5 million in revenue. As he aims to run for a second term in the White House in 2024, Trump has been actively using the social media platform for voter outreach, despite facing 34 criminal charges in New York related to his payment of hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. With 23.4 million Instagram followers, the platform serves as a significant fundraising tool for Trump.

Following the announcement of Joe Biden’s victory in the US presidential election, social media platforms such as Twitter, Meta (formerly known as Facebook), YouTube, and SnapChat blocked the accounts of then-US President Donald Trump in the aftermath of the Capitol Hill protests.

Following the ban of former US President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg released a statement condemning Trump’s actions. Zuckerberg stated that the events that had transpired demonstrated Trump’s intention to obstruct the peaceful transition of power to Joe Biden. He went on to say that Trump’s use of his platform to support his supporters’ actions at the Capitol Building had caused concern both domestically and globally.

Zuckerberg had stated that the risk of allowing then-President Trump to continue using Facebook and Instagram was too high, leading to an indefinite ban on his accounts. However, most of his social media accounts have since had their bans lifted.
