Russia has said that it does not want neighboring Ukraine to join NATO. Russia sees NATO expansion as a threat, as it does not want the forces of these new Western allies at its doorstep.
Putin declared Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine independent shortly before he shocked the world by ordering an attack on Ukraine. Now Putin wants Ukraine to recognize him as an independent country. In this regard, Zelensky said that he is ready for talks.
