Jinping defends zero Covid policy amid Shanghai lockdown to prevent COVID-19 cases

President Xi Jinping has defended a strictly implemented ‘Zero COVID Policy’ in the country amid a record spurt in cases of coronavirus infection in Shanghai and other cities of China. Jinping said on Friday that China’s strictly implemented targeted and effective COVID-19 prevention and control measures ensured the safe and smooth hosting of the Winter Olympics.

Jinping said that in view of the coronavirus epidemic that has caused a crisis for the world, we have given priority to the health of all the participants. We have implemented strict prevention and control measures to prevent the resurgence of corona cases in the country. He was addressing a gathering in honor of those who contributed to the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympics Games.

The Chinese President stressed that our anti-Covid policy has once again stood the test of time. Our policy has given the world useful experience in fighting this dangerous virus and organizing important international events. Jinping has said this at a time when the city of Shanghai, with a population of more than 25 million, has emerged as a new center of infection.

In Shanghai, more than 20 thousand cases of corona are being reported every day for the last week. To slow down the pace of infection, officials are conducting extensive investigations by imposing a lockdown in the city. According to the National Health Commission, 24,100 new cases of the corona were reported in China on Friday. Of these, 22,648 patients are asymptomatic (patients who do not show symptoms).
