Symonds made his international debut for Australia in 1998. Then he was selected for the ODI series against Pakistan. Symonds played the first match of his international career on 10 November 1998. He made his Test debut in March 2004 against Sri Lanka. At the same time, Symonds played the first match of T20 International against New Zealand in February 2005.

In his 11-year (1998-2009) long international cricketing career, Symonds had many such occasions when he won matches for Australia on his own. Apart from being an aggressive batsman, he was also a shrewd bowler. He was a complete package of limited-overs cricket. He played a key role in helping Australia win the World Cup in 2003 and 2007.
