Victoria Justice Speaks Out About 'Challenging' Working Dynamics with Dan Schneider

Victoria Justice is discussing her intricate connection with ex-Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider. Following the airing of “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” on Investigation Discovery two months ago, the 31-year-old Victorious star shared insights into her time working with Schneider in a recent interview published on Wednesday, May 15th.

“I want to make it clear that I don’t support any of his actions,” Justice emphasized to Marie Claire. She then elaborated, “However, my connection with Dan is incredibly intricate. I first met him when I was just 12, and he’s the one who provided me with this significant opportunity. He truly transformed my life. It’s highly probable that I wouldn’t be where I am today without him, without him recognizing something within me. I’ll forever be thankful for that.”

The ex-member of the Zoey 101 cast also recognized Schneider’s apology, wherein he expressed remorse for his past actions during his time on several Nickelodeon productions. “Having seen his apology, I believe he acknowledges the mistakes he made,” Justice remarked, further stating, “If given the chance, I think he would choose to handle many situations differently.” However, Justice pointed out that she is “certainly one of the individuals owed an apology” by Schneider.

Justice rose to fame with her role in Zoey 101 before securing the part of Tori Vega in Nickelodeon’s Victorious, both of which were produced by Schneider. Reflecting on the Quiet on Set docuseries, Justice noted Schneider’s “considerable ego” during his tenure on Nickelodeon’s teen sitcoms. Additionally, she expressed feeling “unfairly treated” at certain points while collaborating with Schneider.

“In the documentary, it was clear that Dan possessed a significant ego, and at times, it seemed to overshadow his ability to make sound judgments and impacted his treatment of others,” Justice observed. “There were occasions when I personally felt unfairly treated.” During their participation in Quiet on Set, several former Nickelodeon cast and crew members accused Schneider of fostering a toxic work atmosphere. Consequently, Schneider initiated legal action against the producers of the ID documentary. He later addressed the allegations in a statement obtained by E! News.

“I acknowledge that I was occasionally an inadequate leader,” Schneider conceded in his statement. “I genuinely apologize and feel remorseful for that conduct, and I will consistently take responsibility for it. While I have no issue with anyone pointing out my shortcomings as a manager, it is inaccurate to lead millions of individuals to falsely believe that I was in any way associated with abhorrent acts similar to those perpetrated by child predators.”
