Last year, there was a 44-day war between the two countries over Nagorno-Karabakh. At least 6500 people were killed and more than 10000 were injured in this war. The war ended with a decisive victory for Azerbaijan after Russian intervention. Israel and Turkey helped Azerbaijan in this war. However, after the latest military skirmish, both the countries have again spoken of the ceasefire, but the possibility of everything being normal is very less.
Russian news agencies quoted Armenia’s Defense Ministry as saying that the soldiers of their country were attacked by the Azerbaijani army with cannon, small arms, and armored vehicles. In this 15 of his soldiers were killed and 12 were captured. At the same time, the Interfax news agency quoted Armenia’s Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan as saying that since Azerbaijan has invaded Armenia’s sovereign territory. Therefore, we are asking Russia to protect the territorial integrity of Armenia on the basis of the existing 1987 agreement between our countries.
Russia has a military base in Armenia as well as a peacekeeping force in Nagorno-Karabakh. On the other hand, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan has said that continuous provocation is being done by Armenia. To answer this, a military campaign was started. In its statement, Azerbaijan blamed Armenia’s military and political leadership. Azerbaijan said that the Armenian army opened fire on Azeri army posts with artillery and mortar fire, in response to which this action was taken.
